Overall, Nick is trustworthy, inquisitive, observant and empathetic. He is intrigued by Gatsby’s optimism and romanticism but is also critical of his illegal activities and his obsession with Daisy, and this shows how his morals are continuously questioned in his relationship with Gatsby. Nick’s identity is also shaped by his interactions and relationships with the other characters in the novel.Hence, his identity is linked to his integrity and honesty, even if it means questioning the societal norms ideals of his friends and relatives. He frequently criticises other characters in the novel, talking about their lack of concern for others and their selfish interests. Another example is Nick’s sense of morality and his ethics.Even though Nick belonged o a privileged family, he is not a member of the elite social circle that he observes throughout the story, and hence, his identity is based on his role as this observer and as someone who sees through the mask of the rich and famous, and is able to understand and comment on their behaviour. Nick as the narrator of the novel describes himself as ‘within and without’ and this position as an outsider looking into the world of the wealthy elite, serves as an example of his struggle with his identity.Nick Carraway also serves as an example of this identity theme as he navigates the complexities of the social world he observes and grapples with his own sense of morality and ethics. This theme of identity is further emphasised by the characters of Jay Gatsby, Nick Carraway, Daisy Buchanan, Jordan Baker, Tom Buchanan, Myrtle Wilson and George Wilson, each of whom face unique problems in establishing their identities and asserting their place in society.Throughout the novel, the characters are forced to confront their identities as well as those of the people around them as they battle with issues of social class, power and privilege.Overall, the theme of identity in The Great Gatsby explores the challenges that the characters encounter as they work to define themselves in a society that is consumed by the ideas of materials and wealth, social status and appearances.Download Identity and The Great Gatsby and more English Slides in PDF only on Docsity!Identity and
